""It’s time for an App Giveaway! Hooray!

Thanks to app developer AMMAa AG, we’re giving away 6 copies their filmmaking reference guide, The Close-Up Film Language Glossary ($2.99). This iPhone & iPad friendly app is perfect for up-and-coming filmmakers looking to beef up their movie making vocabulary. Giveaway details are below.

The app contains an array of terms, descriptions and definitions, all organized in an easy to navigate alphabetical list. A search box is also provided, but I found its usefulness slightly limited since users can only search the terms, and not their definitions. There were a couple terms I didn’t find in the Glossary (i.e. Snap Zoom), but for the most part, it’s a very impressive collection. Since the information is self-contained within the app (and is not being pulled from the internet), you won’t need a network connection to review the data. As with most reference apps, you can easily mark favorites for quick access.

Aside from the Glossary, the app also features what it calls Markers. They are collections of small icons that visually convey complex information. For instance, if you want to quickly get a sense of different camera angles, just review the camera angle markers. I imagine these will be VERY useful to new filmmakers.

There’s nothing revolutionary here. In fact, most of the information in this app can be found in other places (for free in some cases). That said, the Close-Up Film Language Glossary does a very nice job of bringing it all together, and making it easy to understand. Think of it as film school, without all the goth girls dressed in black, listening to the Dead Kennedys. I miss film school.
