App Store “Stories” are promoting interesting apps for filmmakers

Is it just me or has the App Store been especially friendly to filmmakers lately? Recently, Apple has published a bunch of Stories (their name for a collection of related apps) that feature exciting and semi-useful apps for mobile media makers. Here’s a quick sampling: “Shoot it Short and Funky” features 7 unique video camera apps. “Start a Summer Video Project” contains 9 apps for shooting & post-work. “Apps for Stage Actors” (also applies to film actors) has 10 excellent tools for a script reading, rehearsing, annotating, and blocking. And here’s another from the past: “From Script to Screen” contains features

O.P.N. for APRIL 11th, 2019

Welcome to another edition of Other People’s News. Here are a few of the more interesting info-nuggets I’ve recently spotted around the web-o-sphere: 9to5 Mac covers a few of the biggest announcements from this year’s NAB conference, including FiLMiC Pro’s new companion app, FiLMiC Audio. This new app turns your old iOS devices (like that old iPhone 6 sitting in your closet) into wireless microphones! The article also covers FiLMiC Pro’s support for the Movi gimbal, as well as new updates from LumaFusion and Gnarbox. Read it here: https://9to5mac.com/2019/04/10/nab-2019-mobile-video-editing-lumafusion-2-0-filmic-pro-gnarbox/.  For extra credit, here’s NoFilmSchool.com’s video of the FiLMiC updates in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_pyIYxUocQ

Apple Highlights Filmmaking Apps

The iOS App Store’s “Today Tab” just got a lot more interesting! Apple has highlighted a small collection of high-quality apps for iPhone and iPad owning filmmakers. The feature called “Pro Tip: From Script to Screen” lists four apps for preproduction, five for use on set, and another four for postproduction. While it’s a good list, it’s far from complete. Take a look in our APP DIRECTORY for a more comprehensive collection. Here are all of the apps listed in Apple’s feature. Preproduction On Set Postproduction

SHOWCASE: “Parametric” Short Shot on iPhone 6 Plus

Here’s an interesting, visual-effects short film that was shot entirely on an iPhone 6 Plus using FiLMiC Pro. Directed by Amila C. Kumarasinghe, and shot by Dumindra Nathash piers, the film has a distinctive, harsh tone that really does a nice job of capitalizing on the iPhone’s digital sensor. The video I’ve embedded above is actually the 1 minute producer’s cut (which I prefer). The full length version is available here.  And, just for good measure, here’s some behind-the-scenes footage. App mentioned in this post:

MoviePro has just turned 5!

MoviePro ($4.99), a popular video camera app for iPhone, just hit the big five-point-oh. This powerful app has been around since 2012, and has seen a steady string of updates.  According to the developer, Version 5 brings a truckload (my word, not theirs) of bug fixes and a few welcome enhancements including: Directly record video in Camera Roll without delays in copying files. Additional option “Move Video to Camera Roll” in savings option in app library. If you save recordings in App Library, you will find this feature handy to move one or many videos to camera roll in one go without delays
