The Apple Watch Can Now Control GoPro Cameras

After months of user anticipation, GoPro has finally a major update to their iOS app.  This new version brings many slick tweaks, but the most exciting new feature is the ability to control your camera (and preview its shots) directly from your Apple Watch! NoFilmSchool.com has published an overview of the new update: While this certainly isn’t the cheapest way to operate a GoPro, if you’ve already got an Apple watch, it’s definitely one of the more convenient ways instead of pulling out your phone — though you’ll still need that for uploading footage if you choose to do that right away. Are iOS Camera Apps Helping or Hurting Filmmakers?

While that overtly sensational headline may reek of clickbait, it’s also a fair and reasonable question – one I was asked while speaking on a Photography/Videography panel at this year’s Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Jeff Carlson, the panel’s moderator (and all-around-photography-guru), was asking me specifically about the new wave of filmmaking apps that attempt to guide the filmmaking process, and automatically correct their user’s mistakes. It’s a tough question to answer. On the surface, it appears that these applications are replacing creative control with pre-defined scripts and algorithms… but maybe there’s more to it than that. Let’s take a

iWorld 2014 – iPad and Macro lenses from olloclip

No stranger to iPhone videography, olloclip has been producing clip-on lens accessories for years! Their signature product is the 4-in-1 clip-on lens system for iPhone 5/5S and 4/4S. To use it, you simply slide the clip over the edge of your iPhone, positioning one of the olloclip’s four lenses (Fisheye, Wide-Angle, 10x Macro, 15x Macro) over the iPhone’s built-in lens. Easy peazy and fasty wasty! This year, the company was giving sneak peeks of their soon-to-be-released clip-on lens system for the iPad! Same variety of lenses, new iPaddy goodness! Olloclip was also showing off their clip-on macro lenses. Most macro

iWorld 2014 – The new GLIF iPhone Tripod Mount

Studio Neat, one of my favorite companies, was back at the expo this year showing off their newly revamped iPhone tripod mount, the GLIF ($30). Unlike previous versions that were designed to hold a specific iPhone model, the updated GLIF is adjustable, meaning it can hold just about any smartphone, with or without a cover. Most universal tripod mounts feature a spring-loaded clamp to hold your device in place. This means you can instantly swap out one smartphone for another — a nice benefit most mobile filmmakers will never need. The downside of this approach is that the clamp may

iWorld 2014 – Emulsio Video Stablizer for iPhone & iPad

Does your video suffer from the shakes? Perhaps it needs a dose of Emulsio! Equally at home on iPhone or iPad, Emulsio is an impressive app that will stabilize unsteady footage, remove unwanted rolling-shutter artifacts (a.k.a. “jello-cam”), and make you the envy of millions (that last part is not guaranteed). Simply import a shaky video from your iThing’s camera roll, let the app analyze your clip’s motion, move a slider to control how much stabilization you want to apply (higher settings result in greater cropping), and then export the results back to your camera roll or distribute it via the

iWorld 2014 – Grip and Shoot Bluetooth mount for iPhone

The Grip and Shoot is a re-imagined, Bluetooth enabled, mighty awesome pistol-grip for iPhone videographers. While I’ve seen dozens of iPhone handles meant to offer some much needed stabilization, the Grip and Shoot is the first such mount to bring something exciting to the table — wireless control. The handle features three well-positioned buttons that provide wireless control over your iPhone camera’s zoom and shutter functions! As a result, not only will your videos have smoother zooms, but your other hand can remain free for whatever else is required (Pointing a mic? Aiming a light? Holding back zombies?). For me,

iWorld 2014 – Optrix PhotoPro X for iPhone 5 & 5S

Thinking about getting a GoPro? WAIT! If you’ve already got an iPhone, you should definitely check out the Optrix PhotoProX — a rugged, waterproof iPhone case (to 33 feet) with interchangeable lenses. In addition to the camera case itself, Optrix offers a huge variety of accessories including bike mounts, tripod connectors, suction mounts, chest mounts, and much more. My only advice: Make sure you’re not expecting an important call while shooting your action adventure! It might be tough to get to your phone while it’s mounted to the hood of your car.

My other favorite video camera app: Spark

Last week, I posted about FiLMiC Pro ($4.99), the most powerful video camera in the App Store. While it’s the app I rely on most for consistently delivering professional results, there’s another video camera app I love equally (for very different reasons). It’s called Spark ($1.99). While FiLMiC Pro is clearly intended for a pro minded shooter, Spark targets the more casual, playful user. What the app lacks in high-end features, it more than makes up for with unapologetic simplicity. I don’t mean to say that Spark lacks gusto. It just takes a very different approach to filmmaking. Most modern

Is FiLMiC Pro Still the Most Powerful Video Camera App? Spoiler: Yes

While every iThing comes with Apple’s own camera app, you should take a moment and explore the incredible, feature-rich alternatives waiting for you in the App Store. At last count, there were over one trillion of them. Sure, I just fabricated that statistic because I didn’t feel like doing research, but my point is this: There are a LOT of video camera apps. So which should you buy first? Well, that’s easy! FiLMiC Pro ($4.99) is hands down the most powerful video camera app you can add to your arsenal. It starts by giving you manual, independent control over white
