Shang-Chi Director Directed From His iPhone

I enjoyed reading this brief ScreenRant story, so I thought I’d share it here. It describes how Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, was forced to direct an important scene via his iPhone while in the hospital for the birth of his child! Sadly, it doesn’t divulge the details of that unusual workflow, but it’s an excellent reminder that we’re all toting the world’s most versatile piece of filmmaking gear in our pockets and purses!

Apps & Accessories from my MojoFest Presentation

Thanks to everyone who came out for this year’s MojoFest in Galway, Ireland. It was an incredible event overflowing with talented, creative and friendly people from around the globe. I know I tend to speak quickly while on stage (there’s a lot to cover!), so I thought I’d share a short list of the apps and accessories I mentioned during my presentation. Several of these links are for iPhone/iPad versions of apps, however many of the apps are also available in the Google Play store for Android. It’s worth a search if that’s your platform of choice! Director’s Viewfinders

Apple Highlights Filmmaking Apps

The iOS App Store’s “Today Tab” just got a lot more interesting! Apple has highlighted a small collection of high-quality apps for iPhone and iPad owning filmmakers. The feature called “Pro Tip: From Script to Screen” lists four apps for preproduction, five for use on set, and another four for postproduction. While it’s a good list, it’s far from complete. Take a look in our APP DIRECTORY for a more comprehensive collection. Here are all of the apps listed in Apple’s feature. Preproduction On Set Postproduction

Turn your Android into a director’s viewfinder with Cadrage

Tony Myers of smartmoviemaking.com has posted a succinct write-up of Cadrage, a new Android-only app that turns your smartphone into a director’s viewfinder (a tool used by directors and cinematographers to line up shots without having to lug heavy camera equipment all over the place). Cadrage isn’t the first Android app to offer this functionality, but at $10.99, it’s nearly one third the cost of Artemis Director’s Viewfinder (an HHH favorite available for Android and iOS). If you’re an Android owner, make sure to check out Tony’s post!  If you’d like to be notified when Cadrage hits the iOS platform, you can sign

Artemis Director’s Viewfinder gets a MAJOR update

Chemical Wedding has released a major update to their already indispensable Artemis Director’s Viewfinder ($29.99). Version 6 includes a welcome interface re-design, support for AirPlay (Apple’s wireless video protocol) and the ability to store meta-data filled snapshots in a built-in gallery. If you’re not already familiar with Artemis, it’s an app that turns your iPhone’s (or iPad’s) built-in camera into a full-blown, feature rich director’s viewfinder — a gizmo that directors and cinematographers use to line up shots without having to lug a camera all over set. Even though the app has received a lovely face-lift, existing users will feel right

Artemis Director’s Viewfinder has come to the Android!

When I first got my iPhone, I didn’t think of it as a filmmaking tool.  But then I came across an amazing app, and suddenly my perspective changed completely.  I suspect that same revelation is about to hit the thousands of Android owning filmmakers around the world.  Why?  Because Artemis Director’s Viewfinder has come to the Android. Artemis ($29.99) is an awesome digital replacement for the traditional director’s viewfinder. I’ve been using it on set for well over a year.  Users simply select their camera type, shooting format, and lenses. Then, Artemis uses the Android’s built-in camera to simulate the

Artemis UPDATED & Remote RETURNS!

We’ve got two big announcements from Chemical Wedding. Firstly, one of our all-time favorites has just received a major update. Artemis Director’s Viewfinder is an app that turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a director’s viewfinder. I’ve been directing on-set with this bad-boy for well over a year, and it’s simply awesome.  Not only is it incredibly useful, but it’s one of those apps that I keep on hand just to blow minds.

Artemis Directors Viewfinder hits 3.0

They grow up so fast.  It seems like only five months ago, that our favorite virtual viewfinder turned 2. Oh wait… it was only five months ago! And 3.0 has already hit the app store? Yup! And it looks like the new version number is fully warranted! This new iteration of Chemical Wedding’s Artemis Directors Viewfinder adds an often requested feature: The ability to add your own cameras to the list of supported gear. Simply put, if Artemis doesn’t already support your camera, you can take a few simple measurements and add the camera yourself. You can even share your

artemis Director’s viewfinder hits 2.0

Chemical Wedding has just released a significant update to its criminally awesome iPhone app, Artemis Director’s Viewfinder. Version 2 brings additional formats including RED One 4k 2:1 Ana, Canon 5D Mk II and the Canon 7D. Additionally, it can now simulate wider angle lenses in full screen mode. That’s great news!  And, in my opinion, this version has a much prettier interface.

DV EXPO: Helios & Artemis

Nic Sadler and Toby Evetts of Chemical Wedding are already quite well know because of their amazing iPhone sun position calculator, Helios. I’m planning on covering the app very soon… but it may have to wait a bit. Why? Because these guys are about to release what may be one the niftiest filmmaking apps yet. It’s called Artemis (the Director’s Viewfinder). I’ll let them explain. It’s currently under review at Apple, and should be hitting the app store in a week or two.
