Apple Highlights Filmmaking Apps

The iOS App Store’s “Today Tab” just got a lot more interesting! Apple has highlighted a small collection of high-quality apps for iPhone and iPad owning filmmakers. The feature called “Pro Tip: From Script to Screen” lists four apps for preproduction, five for use on set, and another four for postproduction. While it’s a good list, it’s far from complete. Take a look in our APP DIRECTORY for a more comprehensive collection. Here are all of the apps listed in Apple’s feature. Preproduction On Set Postproduction

FINAL DRAFT for iPad is Finally Here! …and it’s only a reader?

Hooray (sort of)! Final Draft is finally coming to the iPad (sort of)! Isn’t that great? Sort of. It’s been the topic of heated discussions since we launched over two years ago. Its progress has been covered at length in multiple HHH articles (see links below).  And, it’s easily the most anticipated Screenwriting app ever to come to a mobile device.  Screenwriters around the world have been waiting for Final Draft to come to the iPad. The good news: Final Draft has finally set a release date for their mobile app (Feb 16th).  The bad news: This is not the application we were expecting.

FDX Reader Gets its LAST major update and goes on sale for limited time

If you’ve been looking for an easy way to read Final Draft FDX files on your iPhone or iPad, now is the time to check out FDX Reader from Quote-Unquote Apps. The app has just received what is likely its last major update (more on that in a second), and has gone on sale, dropping in price from $4.99 to $1.99 (sale ends December 12th). According to the developer, the 1.1.4 update brings performance bumps (especially on the iPhone 4S), fixes a place-saving bug, and includes a new settings bundle to help with troubleshooting. So now, the question you’re probably asking

Adobe Story lets screenwriters review script notes on iPhone

This app has been removed from the App Store One of the coolest web apps around is Adobe Story. Part of Adobe’s CSLive suite of applications, Story is Adobe’s online screenwriting tool that focuses on collaboration (using modern technologies like metadata). If you’re a screenwriter, its worth taking a look. Now, Adobe has expanded the Adobe Story universe by releasing a new iPhone app called…wait for it… Adobe Story. Catchy, right? The new app is NOT a screenwriting app.  But it IS a screenwriter’s app.

FDX Reader brings Final Draft Documents to the iPad

No, Final Draft isn’t on the iPad yet… but that doesn’t mean you can’t read your Final Draft screenplays in the meantime. While there are many terrific apps available for reading scripts in the PDF format (i.e., GoodReader, PDF Expert), there’s only ONE app whose primary purpose is to read native Final Draft documents (.FDX) on the iPad. That app is FDX Reader by Quote-Unquote Apps ($7.99). The app has been around for a few weeks now. You may have heard about it on other sites, but I chose to hold off discussing it on HHH for one important reason:

GoodReader Update adds Annotations (Perfect for Script Notes)

Just two days ago, I was lecturing about iPhone and iPad apps at the DV Expo.  Part of my presentation was spent talking about iAnnotate PDF for iPad, an app that allows you to add various types of notes to your PDF files that can then be shared with others.  I said, and I quote, “It’s the only game in town for script notes.” What a difference one day makes! Yesterday, Good.iWare released version 3.0 of GoodReader for iPad ($0.99).  This app has been a long time favorite of mine due to it’s incredible ability to import documents from a

Rehearsal is every Actor’s new best friend

If you’ve seen me speak at industry events, then you already know I’m a big fan of Sotto Voce Film+Works’ Rehearsal, an app that gives actors an irrefutable reason to purchase an iPad (or an iPhone). At its core, Rehearsal is a script reading application designed specifically for actors who must memorize lines, or submit voice auditions via email. It works on iPhone, but really shines on iPad, since the screen is so much closer to the size of an actual script page. [UPDATE: Make sure to read the developer’s comment below. He makes some great points about the benefits

Spend the holiday with Inglourious Basterds

Looking for a little light holiday reading? We’ve got just the thing… Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. At $13.99, the price is a bit steep. But for any writers-in-training, this screenplay is a must read. Whether you love or hate his films, you have to admit that Tarantino has a knack for engaging dialogue, and explosive tension. “I love rumors! Facts can be so misleading, where rumors, true or false, are often revealing.” The screenplay comes nestled inside the very elegant Iceberg ebook reader. If you haven’t read any of the Iceberg powered books yet (there’s thousands of them in the app store), it’s

So Crazy, it just might work… or it’s just crazy

In the past, it took tremendous effort, talent, and luck to sell a screenplay. Now, all it takes is an iPhone App. At least, that’s what the folks at Digital Thought Software are hoping. They’ve recently released Buy My Screenplay, a collection of 10 screenplay pitches wrapped in an iPhone interface. I assume they’re hoping that someone is curious enough about their unique approach to download the app, and peruse the pitches. I was curious… so I downloaded… and perused.

Is that a newsstand in your pocket, or are you just happy to read me?

It can be difficult staying on top of the latest entertainment industry news, especially when most reporters consider Ashlee Simpson’s newest hairstyle to headline worthy. I’m talking about REAL industry news. Like the fact that Paranormal Activity beat SAW VI at the box office… or that Warner Brothers’ Southland may be sold to TNT… or that Ashlee Simpson has a new hairstyle (I guess there really is no escaping Ashlee Simpson). If you’re looking for REAL entertainment news, grab your iPhone, and follow us!
