HHH and iOS filmmaking featured on today’s Mac OS Ken!

I just got the best day-after-Christmas gift ever!  I was interviewed on today’s Mac OS Ken (the awesome daily Mac news podcast hosted by Ken Ray). Actually, the interview was recorded a couple days ago, but it went live this morning. During our 30 minute conversation, we gabbed about Hand Held Hollywood, the new HHH book, and some terrific filmmaking apps (including FiLMiC Pro). You can also find the podcast in iTunes, or search for it within most iOS podcast apps that offer a program directory. If you’re not already a listener, I highly recommend you check it out. And, if you like what you hear,

How I Spent my Summer Workation

With this post, I’m happy to announce the end of Hand Held Hollywood’s summer hiatus. I call it a ‘hiatus‘ to make it seem as if my absence was planned, which in fact, it wasn’t. The truth is, I am just now catching my breath after the events of a very turbulent summer. Here are a few highlights:

Because, today I get to tell the world about the book I’m currently writing for Peachpit Press titled, Hand Held Hollywood’s Filmmaking with the iPad & iPhone!  As a result of the HHH’s success (thanks to you, my awesome readers!), Peachpit Press contacted me last year, and asked me to write a book on the same subject as the site. The book will take readers through the filmmaking process, one step at a time, and will point out the most useful apps and accessories along the way. If you’re an iPhone or iPad owning filmmaker, and you

Vertical Video Syndrome – a new threat to iPhone filmmakers

Just because you CAN shoot vertical video with your iPhone, doesn’t mean you should. I have to admit, I cringe every time I see a tall skinny video on YouTube and Facebook. Just watching a minute or two makes me want to take a shower.  Thankfully, it appears I’m not alone. To combat the epidemic of improperly formatted smartphone videos, Glove and Boots have released this important PSA. Enjoy, and make sure to pass it along to your horizontally-challenged filmmaking associates. Thanks to HHH reader, Joseph L., for putting this on my radar!

GIVEAWAY: ‘Close-Up Film Language Glossary’ Educates Aspiring Filmmakers

It’s time for an App Giveaway!  Hooray! Thanks to app developer AMMAa AG, we’re giving away 6 copies their filmmaking reference guide, The Close-Up Film Language Glossary ($2.99). This iPhone & iPad friendly app is perfect for up-and-coming filmmakers looking to beef up their movie making vocabulary.  Giveaway details are below. The app contains an array of terms, descriptions and definitions, all organized in an easy to navigate alphabetical list.  A search box is also provided, but I found its usefulness slightly limited since users can only search the terms, and not their definitions. There were a couple terms I didn’t find in the Glossary (i.e. Snap

The Awesome app blog Palm Sounds is shutting down. Damn!

It looks PalmSounds, one of our favorite iThing blogs, is closing its doors. The site has been devoted to mobile audio and music apps since it launched five and a half years ago, but in an open letter published on Monday, the site’s founder, Ashley Elsdon, announced that Palm Sounds would no longer be posting new articles… at least for the time being. This blog has been around for just over 5 and a half years now and especially in the last 12 months it has required more and more time and effort just to stay on top of everything that’s happening in
